Bag-in-box….history, process and application.

To most consumers and packaging professionals, bag-in-box is synonymous with wine. But, in the forty years since bag-in-box was first introduced, a growing number of products have leveraged its significant commercial and logistical benefits. It now accounts for over £500 million of packaging spent worldwide - and it is still growing.

Developments in bag technology and filling techniques have resulted in new materials and patented filling processes. Bags are manufactured from multiple plies of film and the highest quality laminates to achieve maximum strength and the desired barrier properties. The pressure, dwell time and temperature of bag seals are computer controlled on fully automated production lines for accuracy and consistently high quality. Today's filling technology caters for aseptic and non-aseptic applications. For the most sensitive products, 100% sterility can be guaranteed for filling and downstream transfer to maximise shelf life.

The benefits of bag-in-box as a packaging format speak for themselves….product protection from the flexible bag and sturdy box, infinite branding possibilities, efficient logistics and convenient storage. Bag-in-box is now standard in the beverage sector with widespread appeal for postmix syrups, juices, nectars and concentrates as well as food applications such as fresh milk, ingredients, sauces and fruit purees.
